FLORENCE, Ariz. — The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office says two inmates accessed the roof at a jail complex in Florence, were missing for several hours and now face charges of attempted escape.

The inmates were found and returned to their housing unit on Sunday without incident, spokesman Mark Clark said.

The men were identified as 21-year-old Ramon Marquez and 20-year-old Alejandro Garcia-Barraza. Both men are awaiting trial on separate drug charges.

Clark said detectives are investigating how the men accessed the roof. Jail staff noticed the men were missing around 6 p.m. after a routine head-count. The jail was placed on lockdown and the search for the men ended shortly after midnight.

Marquez has been in jail since April while Garcia-Barraza has been there since June.
