SAN JOSE — An accused child molester who escaped from a hospital remains at large.
The Mercury News reports that Johnell Carter attacked a deputy and fled Sunday. He was last seen running toward Moorpark Avenue and Thornton Way.
He was receiving unspecified medical treatment at the hospital when he overpowered the deputy and escaped.
About 45 deputies, three K9 officers, police from the San Jose Police Department and helicopters from the Santa Clara Sheriff’s Office and CHP searched for Carter after his escape.
He is considered dangerous and anyone who sees him should call 911 immediately.
Carter was arrested March 10, 2014, on suspicion of five counts of child molestation.
The Silicon Valley chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) is providing around-the-clock security for Carter’s nine-year-old victim, and say they will continue to guard her until Carter is back behind bars.
Carter was scheduled to stand trial next month for allegedly assaulting the girl.
Santa Clara County Sheriff Spokesperson Sgt. James Jensen said that the department will reevaluate their policy of having only one deputy guarding a minimum-security inmate during transports.
It’s unclear why Carter was classified as a minimum-security inmate despite the severity of his charges and a possible punishment that includes life in prison.
