NASHVILLE, Tenn. — During a court appearance, a man apologized to his wife for attempting to have her killed three times.

The New York Post reports that Fred Wortman tried to poison his wife’s toothpaste, and when that failed, tried to hire a hitman. The third attempt was when he tried to convince another inmate to perform the deed.

“I apologize to [my wife] Staci, the Jones, my parents, my family, most of all I apologize to my three precious children,” he said in court. “No apology which I offer will be sufficient to all who I have disappointed, let down and hurt.”

Wortman allegedly searched the Internet for hitmen to kill his wife, and researched how to poison her toothpaste, according to prosecutors. He plead guilty to all three murder plots on Monday.

He was given a combined 30-year prison sentence.
