Job Description

Job Summary

General duty law enforcement work to protect life and property throughout Sherburne County. Patrol the county to enforce laws and secure compliance with traffic regulations, escort prisoners, undertake routine investigations, serve legal instruments and execute court orders. Work involves an element of personal danger and employees must act without direct supervision and exercise independent judgment meeting emergency situations. Assignments and orders are received from superior officers who review work methods and results through reports, inspections and discussions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Examples of typical duties include but are not limited to the following. Regular attendance according to the department approved work schedule is required for all Sherburne County positions.

Patrol Sherburne County to preserve law and order and to prevent and discover crime.

Answer a wide variety of calls and complaints involving felonies, misdemeanors, domestic disturbances, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, drownings, animal control, searches, and other incidents.

Administer first aide, conduct preliminary investigations, gather evidence, obtain witnesses, make arrests, and transport prisoners.

Enforce traffic laws and cite traffic violators.

Serve warrants, summonses and other processes on persons; execute court orders; conduct routine investigations and assist in complex investigations.

Assist fire departments and other law enforcement agencies in emergency response and natural disaster response.

Testify in court; participate in the preparation of cases for court.

Prepare all necessary reports.

Escort prisoners and others to and from court, jail, other jurisdictions or rehabilitative institutions.

Perform other relevant duties as apparent or directed.

Develop and maintain respectful and cooperative working relationships.

Regular and reliable attendance according to the department’s work schedule.

Additional Information

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required Thorough knowledge of federal, state, county and local laws and ordinances.

Thorough knowledge of criminal justice system, court procedures and applicable equipment.

Ability to quickly evaluate situations and respond to non-routine emergency situations in an appropriate manner.

Ability to recognize and communicate with persons under adverse situations.

Knowledge of public service activities and county policies.

Knowledge of Sherburne County geography, streets and roads.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma Valid Minnesota Driver's License Must meet academic and skills course requirements for state licensure which require successful completion of a two-year college program in law enforcement and an eight-week skills course; or equivalent training/experience recognized by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST). Must be Licensed or eligible to be licensed by the Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training Board (POST) by January 1, 2023.

Must qualify under the selection procedures established for recruitment.

Supplemental Information

Lateral hiring wages will be considered dependent upon experience and qualifications.

Must work rotating shifts including nights, holidays and weekends. Work may be performed in all weather conditions outdoors. Must meet physical requirements as established as part of the recruitment and selection process to perform essential job functions. Take home squad cars available to those residing within Sherburne County. Preemployment physical, agility test, and psychological evaluation to completed following a conditional offer of employment.
