Performs Law Enforcement duties, including protection of Citizens and crime prevention. Maintains security and preserves order.

- Exercises direct supervision over inmates. Plans and supervises inmate unit activities.
- Effectively communicates to provide information, directions, mediations, and de-escalate situations and resolve conflicts.
- Classifies, assesses, and responds to inmates. Processes and releases inmates; takes photographs and obtains a serviceable set of fingerprint impressions.
- Manages the inmate population by walking around the housing units and talking to inmates.
- Sets clear expectations, serves as a role model, uses positive reinforcement techniques, respect, and consideration when working with inmates; assures inmates accountable for their behavior.
- Performs searches to include people, mail items, and/or objects capable of concealing contraband, buildings, vehicles, and large outdoor areas. Inspects unclothed inmates; may be exposed to body fluids and wastes, and diseased persons.
- Restrains inmates; subdues resisting inmates using approved techniques of arrest control, defensive tactics, and weapons; resorts to the use of hands, feet and other approved weapons in defense of self or others.
- Physically breaks up fights and altercations between inmates.
- Pursues fleeing inmates.
- Performs crisis intervention activities to include inmate counseling, suicide prevention, recognizing and addressing abnormal behavior.
- Performs rescue functions to include, administering emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging, and carrying people away from dangerous situations, securing and evacuating people from areas, and extinguishing fires.
- Conducts visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.
- Engages in law enforcement patrol functions that include walking on foot patrol and physically checking the doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are secure.
- Initiates and responds to radio communications.
- Testifies and attends court and speaks formally as necessary.
- Reads, comprehends, and processes legal and non-legal documents.
- Prepares investigative and other reports, sketches, and drawings, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.
- Processes, files, labels, alphabetizes reports as appropriate.
- Enters and searches data into computer systems or databases.
- Utilizes protective equipment including self-contained breathing apparatus and other air filtering devices. Gathers information and collects evidence; interviews and obtains statements from involved parties.
- Prepares investigative and other reports, sketches, and drawings, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations; determines when probable cause exists; recommends inmate disciplinary action
- When a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of Commissioners, all Larimer County employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker.
- Performs other duties as appropriate or necessary for the performance of the job.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Read and comprehend Colorado Revised Statutes, County ordinances, Sheriff's Office and County policy, rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures.
- Read and comprehend recent court rulings and legal standards to effectively enforce laws and ordinances while protecting the rights of citizens.
- General office practices and procedures.
- Routine software and business application including, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and databases.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
- Principles and procedures in law enforcement, supervision, and motivation.
- First aid and community cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques.
- Respond quickly and appropriately in emergencies.
- Assess situations and people.
- Standard broadcasting procedures of a radio system.
- Perform self-defense techniques.
- Observe and recall names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must be at least 21 years of age by date of hire.
- Current first aid and community CPR certificates required.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License required.
- No criminal convictions as defined by Colorado P.O.S.T. required.
- ***Must be able to:
- Run from dark into light or light into dark.
- Wear and operate a gas mask and other protective equipment where there may be hazardous chemical, biological, or other types of airborne chemicals are present.
- Wear a variety of uniforms, vests, and equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
- Run for short or long distances, change directions quickly while running, and run up and down stairs.
- Jump or leap over small obstacles.
- Push or pull to manually open or shut heavy doors and/or force doors open.
- Climb through small openings or crawl or maneuver in small confined areas.
- Work in hazardous or dangerous work areas or situations.
- Engage in physically strenuous activities to perform Deputy Non-Certified duties, including using physical techniques to control persons, push or shove person to defend self, wrestle people to the ground or on the ground, break up fights between people, and operate extinguishers or other fire equipment, etc.
- Must have quick reactions.
- Go from stationary to exertion in an instant.
- Shift work required.
- Shifts require working days, nights, weekends and holidays.
- An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
- As marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law, testing positive for marijuana (medical or otherwise) or any other substance for which the county tests will result in the contingent offer of employment being revoked. Successful completion of the drug screen is defined as obtaining a negative result.
- Successful applicants will be required to meet all of the following qualifications prior to hiring:
- Must be 21 years of age by date of hire
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
- Cannot have a felony conviction
- No convictions involving domestic violence
- No use of illegal drugs within the past five years
- No use of marijuana in any form within the past two years
- Pass integrity questionnaire
- Pass a written examination
- Pass the following physical fitness agility test based on the Essential Job Functions, with or without reasonable accommodation:
- 1.5 mile run in 16 minutes or less
- Physical Agility Course similar to the LawFit course. Applicants will receive an outline describing the course.
- Age: 21
- Education: High School Diploma or GED
- Experience: None required
Following the Physical Fitness Test, you must also:
- Pass oral board interview
- Pass an in-depth background investigation including criminal history and financial status
- Pass polygraph examination
- Pass a Captain's interview and receive a conditional offer
- Pass psychological evaluation
- Pass medical examination
- Pass drug testing
- Possess or obtain First Aid and CPR (All Ages) certificates by date of hire
