Located in central Kansas, LCMHF is the newest and the smallest of the eight prisons of the Kansas Department of Corrections. Approximately two miles west of the city of Larned on Highway 156, the facility is 3/4 miles south on Highway 264, on the east (left) side of the highway.
The LCMHF Central Unit has a capacity for 150 maximum-custody male inmates who have been diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness.
The LCMHF West Unit houses up to 288 minimum-custody male inmates who are placed at Larned to provide support services to LCMHF and to neighboring communities.
The primary mission of this position is to protect and serve the public; the secondary mission is to promote change in the inmates’ behavior through modeling and improving problem solving, communication skills, and work ethics. This position provides immediate supervision to all levels of the inmate population during a routine shift, resolves problems, and responds to emergencies with the goal of creating and maintaining a safe living and working environment. Ultimately the goal is to modify the incarcerated inmates’ behavior so that they may, if judged appropriate by the laws of Kansas, re-enter society and become productive law abiding members of a community.
