As a Juvenile Correctional Officer, you will oversee the safety and well-being, along with supervising the activities, of at-risk youth in a detention facility. The Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) is a state-licensed facility for juveniles ages 10 to 18+, for juveniles pending disposition of their court cases at the Juvenile Detention Center. If you have a passion for working with at-risk youth and have great adaptability skills, then this position may be for you.

Some positions require enforcing security regulations, rules of conduct, and work rules of female offenders, being female has been determined to be a Bona Fide Occupational Qualification (BFOQ), therefore some positions must be filled by a female applicant.

Salary will be based upon the qualifications of the applicants and is negotiable within the salary range for this position

Location and hours: This position is located at the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center at 510 Park Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55415. Candidates must be available to work various shifts, which include day, evening, overnight, holiday, and weekend hours. The schedule requires various 10 and 12 hour shifts to provide 24-hour coverage. Shift schedules are subject to change due to division programming changes.

A shift differential of $1.00 per hour will be paid for nights and weekends. Facility meals are provided and a uniform allowance is given for qualifying positions. This position is recruitment critical and eligible for an employee referral bonus. Current Hennepin County employees who refer candidates may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus.

About the position type: This posting will be used to hire various full-time, benefit-earning and limited duration (temporary up to 2 years), non-benefit earning, up to 19 hours/week positions. This position is internally classified as a Correctional Officer, Juvenile. Click ++here++ to view the job classification specification. Effective September 1, 2021, all new job offers are conditional based on the candidate being fully vaccinated for COVID-19. “Fully vaccinated” means 14 days after receiving the second dose in a two-dose vaccination series approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on a full or emergency-use basis, or 14 days after receiving a single-dose vaccine approved by the FDA on a full or emergency-use basis. After a conditional job offer is made, the candidate must show proof of full vaccination prior to their start date. A COVID-19 vaccination card from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a vaccination record from your doctor’s office or a personal digital vaccination record constitutes sufficient “proof.” The candidate must also attest they are vaccinated by completing a form on the first day of employment. In this position, you will:

  • Ensure the safety of staff and residents by building relationships, employing de-escalation techniques, and using verbal directives and force when necessary.
  • Act as a role model and mentor for juvenile residents in the facility by establishing healthy relationships with them and acknowledging and responding appropriately to resident behavior.
  • Partner with co-workers to plan, organize, administer, and supervise resident daily activities, such as recreation, school, and volunteer programs, conduct life-skills programs, and leisure activities.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of professionals which may include supervisors, managers, other juvenile correctional officers, social workers, probation officers, and justice partners.
  • Enforce resident rules; document resident behaviors and activities in appropriate logs and reports.
  • Receive and/or release juveniles from facility; transport residents as needed with a Hennepin County vehicle.

Need to have:

  • One of the following:
    • Two years or more (90 quarter/60 semester credits) of college or vocational/technical coursework in corrections, a related criminal justice or behavioral/social science field, or law enforcement.
    • Two years or more of full-time equivalent work experience in corrections, criminal justice, or law enforcement.
    • Active military duty with an honorable discharge.
    • Note: Completion of an ++Evidence-Based Practice Corrections Professional Certificate++ from an approved school may be substituted for one year of relevant coursework or work experience.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a ++Hennepin County driver's permit++.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend, reach, run, and walk both inside and outside.

Nice to have:

  • Experience:
    • Serving the needs of at-risk youth in a residential setting (such as group counselors, outreach workers etc.).
    • Working in a correctional, residential treatment, and/or other comparable setting which involved the supervision and/or control of clients.
    • Communicating effectively and professionally both verbally and in writing.
  • Commitment and dedication to the needs of adolescent offenders and their families.
  • Completion of an internship and/or have paid work experience for Hennepin County's Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCCR) or similar jurisdiction.
  • Ability to work effectively with an increasingly diverse client population.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Individual and interpersonal behavior within a social system.
    • The criminal justice system and its stakeholders.
    • Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, African American, new immigrant cultures, and/or other diverse communities.

Under facility licensing requirements, positions at the Juvenile Detention Center are required to undergo a Department of Human Services Background Study (MS 245C.13). Convictions for certain crimes will have an effect on your ability to be hired according to the disqualification schedule listed in Minnesota Statute 245C.15. Individuals convicted for any level of Criminal Sexual Conduct are disqualified from being hired into any position within the DOCCR under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). Other past involvement with the criminal court system will not automatically disqualify you from working at the DOCCR; individual circumstances are reviewed and evaluated confidentially.
