DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
The North Carolina Department of Public Safety continuously recruits for Registered Nurses and will accept on-line applications regardless of whether or not there is a current vacancy. Applications received will be screened for vacancies as they occur and will be kept for 180 days. Correctional Nurses are a critical link to identify health care needs of the individual offender and promote treatment. A Correctional Nurse has the opportunity to make a significant impact on an individual and a community. The expertise and attitude of Correctional Nurses can make the difference it takes to promote quality health care standards and to provide an effective liaison with community support services. Adult Correction has a varied population of 37,000+ offenders with medical and mental health needs, requiring a range of care including acute, chronic and outpatient services. Positions are located in facilities statewide.
Position provides professional nursing care/treatment to patients in accordance with medical protocols, written policies and procedures, and the NC Board of Nursing scope of practice. Work includes conducting sick call/assessment, assisting the physician, carrying out orders, and planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care. Position responds to medical emergencies; monitors for communicable diseases; counsels for compliance with diet, medications and treatment; responds to inquiries and medical appointments; orders medications and supplies; provides additional nursing care duties, as required. Position requires oversight of LPN and CNA I/II staff, as designated by management. Individuals may be required to work any shift, weekend, or holiday, with limited supervision, as assigned.
Some facilities have specialty roles which include: * Outpatient Settings (all prisons): Manages hundreds of patients in an outpatient setting; handles emergency situations and triage concerns; determines who needs to be seen by nursing or an alternative provider or who needs urgent intervention; manages multiple units and comprehensive documentation. * Regional Medical Center (RMC) Nursing (Central Prison & NC Correctional Institution for Women only): Performs primary care nursing with assistance of RNs, LPNs and HCT (Health Care Technician); passes medications to patients including identifying allergies, contraindications and interactions; assists staff in performing total patient care; performs complex wound care including dressings and wound vac instillation and care; manages central line sites; manages medically complex patients including contact, neutropenic, droplet and reverse isolation precautions. * OR Nursing (Central Prison only): Provides Pre- and Post-OP care to patients; assists with Pre-OP preparation and care including patient education and placing IVs; functions independently in the Endoscopy area assisting with upper and lower endoscopies; scrubs and circulates in the OR area performing Intra-OP duties as assigned anticipating provider needs; assists with ordering and stocking supplies and maintaining the count of sharp objects as well as procedure trays. * Inpatient/Residential Mental Health Nursing (Central Prison, NC Correctional Institution for Women & Maury Correctional only): Performs nursing assessments for Mental Health and medical concerns; processes admissions and discharges ensuring continuity of care and meeting all patient needs; provides acute Mental Health crisis intervention and group facilitator for unit and treatment mall based programs. * Urgent Care Nursing (Central Prison only): ACLS certification; assesses various medical needs; handles emergency situations and crisis intervention for acute Mental Health patients and Medical patients. * Regional Float Nurse (Locations: Western Region, South Central Region, Central Region and Eastern Region): Provide staffing relief for facilities throughout the assigned region. A state vehicle is provided for travel. Work includes sick call assessment, medication administration, phlebotomy sticks, transcribing MD/PA orders, patient education, thorough medical documentation, monitoring and treatment of communicable diseases and responding to emergencies. Knowledgeable of multiple clinical (i.e. competencies, documentation, venipuncture, sick call protocol) topics and skills, teaching abilities must be such to train multiple disciplines with various educational preparation including custody, nurses, auxiliary staff and offenders. May be required to work all shifts, weekends and holidays.

- If possess a single state RN license from a state other than NC, must apply and receive at a minimum a "temporary license" to practice in NC prior to hire date.
