Texas inmate escapes while being transferred

Associated Press

BAYTOWN, Texas — Authorities say a Texas inmate has escaped during a prison transfer after temporarily taking two prison guards hostage.

Officials believe Arcade Joseph Comeaux (KOH'-moh) is armed and wearing a prison officer's uniform.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice says Comeaux was being transferred on Monday from a prison in Huntsville to one in Beaumont when he pulled out a gun. The 49-year-old then took the prison officers' weapons and handcuffed them together in the back of the prison van before escaping on foot.

Police found the officers unharmed Monday.

The 6-foot, 200-pound Comeaux is serving a life sentence for convictions in Fort Bend County of indecency with a child, aggravated sexual assault and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
