PRESS RELEASE
FARGO, N.D. — Reassurance Solutions (http://rs.care), a leader in custody health monitoring technology, today announced that its XK-300 sensor successfully detected a life-threatening medical emergency at the Cass County Jail, enabling staff to save an inmate’s life just one month after system installation.
The incident occurred when an inmate, who had been medically cleared, was placed in an intake cell. Within minutes, the XK-300 sensor issued an alert indicating abnormal respirations. Responding staff discovered the inmate in agonal breathing with a pulse, which was subsequently lost moments later.
“I am certain that despite the medical clearance, the known alcohol intoxication, and the special close observation monitoring that was established for this inmate, the medical emergency occurred just a few minutes after being placed into a cell,” said Captain Andrew Frobig, Jail Administrator for the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. “The sensor alert enabled our on-duty staff to begin providing care that revived this inmate, and without the benefit of the XK-300 Sensor, the next scheduled check about 10 minutes later very likely would have been too late to recognize the emergency.”
Jail staff immediately administered Narcan as a precautionary measure and began CPR while awaiting emergency medical response. The inmate was successfully revived in the cell and transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
Captain Frobig credits Cass County’s decision to equip all intake cells with XK-300 sensors, rather than limiting installation to select cells, as crucial to the successful outcome. “There were no indications ahead of time that would have caused our staff to put this particular inmate under this monitoring system if it was a limited availability to only one or two cells,” he explained. “It has probably already paid for itself considering the potential outcome if we had not installed this system.”
The XK-300 sensor provides continuous, contactless monitoring of vital signs including respiratory rate and patterns, alerting custody staff in real-time to potentially life-threatening changes. The technology is designed to supplement—not replace—traditional welfare checks and staff observations.
“This incident demonstrates exactly why the XK-300 contactless monitoring system is so important,” said Jon Lloyd, President at Reassurance Solutions. “Even with medical clearance and enhanced monitoring protocols in place, medical emergencies can develop rapidly and unexpectedly. Our technology gives custody staff the critical early warning they need to intervene when every second counts.”
Captain Frobig shared his experience with the system at a recent statewide jail administrators meeting, emphasizing the value of comprehensive sensor deployment across intake areas where inmates are most vulnerable to undetected medical emergencies.
