SACRAMENTO — A correctional officer who was enjoying a movie with his family during his off-duty hours sprang into action when he realized a 4-year-old with another family was having a medical issue.
Walter Morrer, of the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, helped the boy’s family move him out of the audience and started chest compressions until emergency medical services arrived, according to The Reporter.
Moorer was one of four correctional professionals – two other officers and a nurse – who were honored during an annual Medal of Valor ceremony last month. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his life-saving efforts.
“I think working in the department gives you a heightened sense,” Moorer said. “I’m more aware of my surroundings. I’m more alert in certain situations. It’s almost like you’re trained to respond on or off duty.”
Also honored at the ceremony was Correctional Officer Shaneel Prasad, Correctional Officer Sergio Martinez and a nurse who all assisted in saving the life of an inmate.
All of the officers tried to wave off receiving the award, saying they were “just doing what we were supposed to be doing.”
