NEW ORLEANS — Four of the 10 inmates who escaped from the Orleans Justice Center last May in a brazen jailbreak have been returned to the New Orleans lockup due to jail capacity issues in the state, officials said Monday.
The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office was notified two weeks ago that Corey Boyd, Dkenan Dennis, Kendall Myles and Gary Price would transfer back to the jail more than a year after they crawled through a hole from a ripped-out toilet to escape the facility.
The inmates’ transfer was spurred by bed capacity shortages and issues related to necessary travel to and from Orleans for the defendants’ court dates, OPSO officials said.
Newly minted Orleans Parish Sheriff Michelle Woodfork ordered leadership to develop a housing placement and security plan ahead of the four inmates’ arrival, according to a statement from OPSO.
“We will be working with local public safety partners to fully assess the progress of the defendant’s cases to determine how soon they will return to DOC,” officials said.
Boyd, Dennis, Myles and Price all face a bevy of charges in addition to their escape counts, including attempted murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and aggravated assault.
Nine of the escapees are set to face trial on Sept. 15 for their role in the jailbreak. Kendall Myles, who was previously declared incompetent to stand trial, will have another competency hearing in July.
