BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Police are investigating whether an inmate who was at the courthouse earlier in the day had a loaded weapon on his person before disposing of it at the Bridgeport Correctional Center.

The man’s name has not been made public, but a loaded .308-caliber handgun was found in a trash can at the correctional facility, according to the CT Post.

State police are investigating the incident.

The trash can that had the weapon in it is located near where prisoners are unloaded from the transport vans and trucks to go into the prison. Inmates are shackled together in one line as they come off the vehicles, and an inmate at the end of the line would have access to the trash can.
