ELY, Nev. — Officials are investigating an incident where birdshot was fired at a maximum-security prison in Nevada to end a fight between inmates at Ely State Prison.
MyNews4 reports that an inmate not involved in the fight received eye injuries from the birdshot and was treated at a nearby hospital.
Four other inmates also not involved in the fight were injured, but were treated at the prison.
The fight started Tuesday evening when four inmates attacked another prisoner. Officers gave verbal commands for the fight to stop, but two inmates continued fighting even after one officer fired a blank round.
Another officer then “skip shot a live round consisting of 7.5 birdshot in the direction of the two fighting inmate combatants in accordance with policy,” according to a statement released by the Nevada Department of Corrections.
Details regarding the fight are unclear and no correctional officers were injured.
