TORONTO, Canada — A pregnant staff member, among others, became stuck in a locked zone for up to a hour when prison locks malfunctioned.
A computer malfunction caused a shutdown of the locking system, according to the Toronto Sun, at the new Toronto South Detention Center.
“The place is very modern,” acknowledged one corrections officer, “but there are some bugs in the system to be worked out and we saw that [Tuesday].”
The pregnant staff member was forced to use a garbage pail to go to the bathroom; it’s expected that she’ll file the first staff complaint since the jail opened last fall.
Employees are demanding a review of the issue, saying that anything could have happened.
“They need to address this not having a manual way to open doors because if there had been inmates in there or a fire, who knows what could have happened? Last thing we would want is to see someone raped or die of smoke inhalation.”
Officials released a statement, saying there was no breach in security during the lockdown and that the incident was under investigation.
