GETTYSBURG, Pa. — The trooper who shot an armed man outside the Adams County Jail was justified in using deadly force, according to the district attorney.

ABC News reports that Adams County District Attorney Shawn Wagner said the sergeant had to make a “split second” decision and did what was best in the interest of protecting others.

Jess Leipold, 31, died at the York Hospital after being shot. He had been found on prison grounds armed with a handgun, an AR-15 rifle and a hunting knife. Before police arrived, he’d entered the prison lobby and pointed a gun at a corrections officer before leaving the facility again.

He fired rounds in the prison parking lot and was shot after he took aim with the rifle at a prison window.
