LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles County sheriff’s custody assistant is being credited with saving the lives of 42 people from a burning bus over the weekend.
NBC News reports that Jesse Hernandez was driving to work on Sunday when he saw flames coming out of the back of a charter bus.
He immediately pulled over and ran toward the bus, where he noticed passengers “frantically hitting and kicking the exit door, which appeared to be stuck, trapping everyone inside.”
Hernandez forced the bus door open and helped both passengers and the bus driver escape. He also checked the bus to make sure everyone was off of the burning vehicle.
No one was seriously injured.
Hernandez has been with the sheriff’s department for three years and hopes to become a deputy.
