SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn.— Not only did the Tennessee Department of Correction drastically change the way it supervises people on probation and parole, it did so without telling some key players, including prosecutors and lawmakers.
We told you about the policy shift Monday at 6 pm.
TDOC is now using most of its resources to supervise higher risk offenders while scaling back supervision for lower risk offenders. Sullivan County District Attorney Barry Staubus and Rep. Jon Lundberg (R-District 1) said the move outraged and blindsided them.
Staubus can give you example after example of how the current probation and parole system has failed him with offenders who are convicted, then released, then sent to prison and let go again only to re-offend. Considering his experience, you can understand why he was even more frustrated when he learned new, relaxed probation and parole supervision standards for some offenders were in place.
