ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — County jail inmates could soon have access to Apple iPads through a pilot program.

Allegheny County Jail will be offering inmates stripped-down tablets that would give them a constructive alternative to watching TV while behind bars, reports Penn Live. The tablets would be loaded with educational, vocational and treatment software.

There would also be no Internet access.

The program will include 80 tablets; the county will spend $105,000 to pay for a further 40 tablets.

The funding will come from an inmate welfare fund, which receives money from phone call fees and commissary sales.
