DURHAM, N.C. — Duke University is developing a cost-effective solution for detecting contraband-delivering drones around prisons.
According to CBS 17, the acoustic-detection system uses artificial intelligence to pick up sounds made by certain kinds of drones while ignoring other aircraft in the sky.
The solar-powered system only costs a few hundred dollars and requires little manpower, according to the report.
The project is being led by Dr. Missy Cummings, who’s currently a professor at Duke and was one of the Navy’s first female fighter pilots.
“The prisons just need to know that someone’s out there,” Cummings said.
The project is supported by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.
