CONCORD, N.H. — A felony charge has been filed against a driver who struck and killed a corrections officer more than a year ago.

ConcordMonitor.com reported that Jessica Warren was indicted on one count of driving after suspension in connection with the Sept. 5, 2018, crash that killed Sgt. Patrick Bettens.

In January 2018, Warren was convicted of a misdemeanor count of operating after suspension. Nine months later, she drove and struck Bettens. Under the state’s law, a motorist operating after suspension can be charged with a Class B felony, which is punishable by up to seven years in state prison.

The indictment accuses Warren of unlawfully operating a motor vehicle on Sept. 5, 2018, resulting in Sgt. Bettens’ death.

Bettens, a U.S. Army veteran and father of two young boys, was employed by the New Hampshire Department of Corrections. He was an avid bicyclist, runner and swimmer. He was training for a triathlon when he was struck and killed.
