JUNEAU, Alaska — Hundreds of Alaska men will walk a mile in heels on Saturday to bring awareness to sexual assault in the annual Stand Against Rape (STAR) fundraiser.

Correctional Officer Tommy Quinlan is one of those men, and has participated in the fundraiser for the last three years, according to KTUU.

STAR holds their ‘Walk A Mile In Her Shoes’ fundraiser, an international men’s march to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence.

“I’ve had friends and family directly affected by sexual assault, so I just felt like that, you know, STAR and what they offer, I just felt I needed to get behind an organization like that,” Quinlan said.

He says that working in corrections has given him a unique perspective on sexual assault. He tries to keep his personal life and work separate, but it’s difficult to do so.

“We try to reach out as much as possible, we’re all professionals; you have to treat everyone like people regardless. It’s all about respect. You just do what you can, do your job, and do it to the best of your ability,” he said.

This year’s event is April 18, and registration begins at 11:30 a.m. Visit staralaska.com for more information.
