ANNAPOLIS — Sen. Richard Colburn, R-37-Mid-Shore, expressed some concern at a recent Eastern Shore delegation meeting about what effect a death penalty repeal would have on correctional institutions.

“Should we be concerned about our correctional officers now that there is no penalty?” Colburn asked. “If you’re serving two consecutive life-without-parole sentences and you kill a correctional officer, obviously, what are you going to do? Where do you put them when (they) do something like that?”

Though the death penalty repeal legislation, Senate Bill 276, was passed in the Senate, it still requires action in the House. The bill, which Colburn said he is sure the House will pass, is scheduled to be heard Wednesday in the House.
