HARTFORD, Conn. — Four correction officer were hospitalized and two others remained on the job after an alleged attack by an inmate at a Connecticut correctional institution on Monday night.
Just before 9 p.m. Monday, an incarcerated man at the Cheshire Correctional Institution allegedly approached the officer’s station in the housing unit after the discovery of contraband in his cell and immediately began to throw closed fist strikes at the two officers who were stationed there, according to Andrius Banevicius, public information officer for the Connecticut Department of Correction. The man allegedly struck both officers in the face.
The man’s alleged attack continued as additional staff members responded to the incident, Banevicius said. After a period of time, staff members were able to safely secure the man.
According to Banevicius, six correctional officers sustained injuries as a result of the incident. Four of the staff members were taken by a facility vehicle to an area hospital for treatment and two others remained on duty, Banevicius said.
The Connecticut State Police are investigating the incident, according to Banevicius.
“As this is an active investigation the identity of the combative individual is not being released at this time,” Banevicius said.
“My thoughts are with the injured officers and their families as I pray for their swift and full recovery,” said interim commissioner Sharonda Carlos . “We are conducting a thorough review of the incident to minimize the chances for a reoccurrence of a similar incident.”
