Kan. inmates assault 2 COs

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — Two officers at a privately run prison were attacked by inmates and hospitalized late Wednesday with stab wounds, authorities said.

The two officers at the Leavenworth Detention Center were stabbed in two separate but simultaneous attacks by two inmates during routine rounds about 10:15 p.m., said Connie Parish, prison spokeswoman. She said the attacks occurred in the prison’s maximum-security section.

The officers were hospitalized Thursday in the Kansas City area and were in stable condition. Neither would require surgery, Parish said.

“They are resting and seem to be doing quite well,” Parish said. “One was more seriously injured, but he’s doing OK.”

The prison, which houses about 1,000 men and women, is operated by Nashville-based Corrections Corporation of America. The prison was placed on lockdown while the attacks were being investigated, Parish said.

The prison houses inmates from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Parish said the officers were stabbed, but authorities have not found the weapons involved.

The two inmates involved in the stabbings and a third inmate who may have been involved in an attack were segregated from the other inmates. No details about the inmates, including their names, were released.

The prison staff and the Leavenworth County sheriff’s office were investigating the attacks, Parish said. The assaults appeared to be isolated and not tied to any other incidents, she said. A motive has not been determined.
