PULASKI COUNTY, Ark. — Even though the Pulaski County Jail is bursting at the seams, a 250-bed work center nearby hasn’t even been touched.
KATV reports that the problem is twofold: the county doesn’t have enough room to house its prisoners, causing them to refuse certain arrests, but they also don’t have enough money to run the untouched work center.
Now they’re hoping to rent the work center to the state for one dollar, if the state will also take 125 state prisoners with it.
“They take half of the inmates, the convicted inmates that they are holding in our jail here, and move them out of our facility,” said Sheriff Doc Holladay.
For the DOC, the price is right. “So, we will be working out details to get those beds open as quickly as possible,” said DOC spokesperson Shea Wilson.
They hope the work center will be up and running by the end of the month.
