ONTARIO, Canada — In order to better serve a growing bilingual population, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office has agreed to improve translation and other services for that population.
According to the Democrat and Chronicle, a growing population of Hispanics is necessitating the language upgrade. Documents such as Miranda warnings and incident reports will be translated, and the office will make every attempt to hire bilingual officers.
Training on cultural and linguistic competency has been provided to the sheriff’s Office by Ramona Palmer, executive director of the Victim Resource Center.
At present, only one police officer out of 60 and one corrections officer out of 100 is fluent in both English and Spanish.
The department is also looking for apps that would assist in translation.
