SAN ANTONIO — A public information officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice has retired after watching hundreds of executions.
FOX News reports that Michelle Lyons has been with the TDCJ since 2001.
At first she considered her position just a job, and viewing executions was a part of it, but eventually she was worn down.
“I began seeing it wasn’t so black and white,” she said. “There was a lot of gray in the middle.”
A staunch supporter of the death penalty, Lyons felt her empathy for the families of victims extending to the families of the inmates as well.
“They too had not asked to be put in that position,” she said. “Seeing all those moms go through what they did was extremely hard to watch. Especially after I became a mom.”
Now that she’s retired, her primary job is being a mother. She says she never wants to see another execution.
