BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A Taft Federal Correctional Institution guard pleaded guilty Monday to conspiring to smuggle cellphones, cash, alcohol, heroin and methamphetamine into the prison.
Ramon Cano, 28, of Bakersfield, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to provide and possess contraband in prison, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of California.
According to court documents, between November and Feb. 27, Cano conspired with inmate Gerardo Alvarez-Montanez, 32, to smuggle in the contraband in exchange for cash.
Cano is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Anthony W. Ishii on Dec. 15.
On June 23, Alvarez-Montanez pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to provide and possess contraband in prison.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 15.
Both men face a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
