Routine cell search turns into fight between COs, inmates

ATLANTA, Ga. — A routine cell search turned into a fight that left both inmates and officers at the Atlanta City Detention Center injured.

NBC News reports that an officer noticed contraband inside a cell housing two federal inmates. When he entered the cell to confiscate the contraband, the inmates attacked.

A second officer tried to get involved, with caused several more inmates to join the fight.

The first officer who was attacked was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with injuries to the neck and back. Two more officers received minor injuries and a supervisor suffered a cut to the lip.

One federal inmate sustained mouth injuries and was taken to Grady, while three more inmates reported minor injuries.

The housing unit where the fight occurred is on lockdown.
