SCOTTSBLUFF — A Scotts Bluff County corrections officer has been declared brain dead, authorities said, after being attacked at the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center by a teenage inmate.

Dylan Cardeilhac, 15, of Torrington, Wyo., had been facing charges of attempted murder, a Class II felony, said Scotts Bluff County Attorney Doug Warner. Warner said the teen is suspected of attacking Amanda Baker, 24, a corrections officer, about 2 a.m. Friday, strangling her. Cardeilhac, has been jailed since early December on charges of armed robbery and use of a weapon to commit a felony, in connection with a Dec. 3 armed robbery at the Mitchell Kwik Stop.

Cardeilhac was in isolation in the juvenile detention portion at the time of the attack. He will remain isolated, Warner said, and corrections officers will exercise extra caution in handling him. Baker was hospitalized after the attack. About 3:20 p.m. Friday, Warner said the County Attorney’s Office had been updated that physicians had declared Baker brain dead.
