AUBURN, N.Y. — Five officers were injured after a prisoner refused orders to enter his cell Dec. 6 at Auburn Correctional Facility, the state corrections officers union said in a news release on Wednesday.

The New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association said that the 25-year-old prisoner, who was convicted of murder in 2019, headbutted one officer and cut another with a makeshift weapon during the incident. It began when the prisoner, refusing to enter his cell, lunged at staff and unsuccessfully attempted to headbutt an officer. He was restrained to the floor, where he remained combative and spit at staff. Three officers used body holds on the prisoner’s upper body, and three used holds on his lower body, until he became compliant and was brought to his feet.

The prisoner then lunged again, this time headbutting an officer in the forehead, the union said. He was forced into the back corner of his cell, where he eventually became compliant.

After the incident, an officer noticed a laceration on his right forearm consistent with a cutting weapon. He was taken to Auburn Community Hospital to treat it, as well as shoulder pain. A second officer sustained ankle and elbow injuries, and three more officers sustained knee, shoulder, elbow and forehead injuries. They were treated by medical staff at the facility, the union said, and remained on duty.

A search of the prisoner and the area where the incident occurred did not produce a weapon, the union said.

The prisoner was convicted of second-degree murder in Kings County for shooting a 36-year-old victim in the head in their apartment.
