MILWAUKEE — A correctional sergeant was stabbed several times in a targeted attack, WISN reports.

The attack happened outside the Milwaukee County Jail on March 5. According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect in the attack was recently released from custody at the jail.

The sergeant, a 14-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, was stabbed while he was walking into work at 5:30 a.m., according to WISN.

The sergeant was stabbed several times and was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The sheriff’s office said the sergeant is stable and recovering.

“These officers come into work every day, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to do an extremely difficult job, a dangerous job, and quite frankly a job that not everybody can do,” Chief Deputy Daniel Hughes said during a news conference. “The sheriff and I stand behind our sergeant and wish for a quick recovery.”

A 41-year-old man was arrested by Milwaukee police shortly after the attack. Police said the suspect targeted the victim and the sergeant was able to identify his attacker.

The sheriff’s office said the suspect was released from jail on Jan. 19. According to court records, he has a history of assaulting court security and corrections officers while incarcerated, WISN reports. In those previous incidents, the suspect was found not guilty because of mental disease or defect.
