SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. — Nine women behind bars at the Shelby County Jail face new charges after lawmen found drugs in their system during a round of drug tests given in the lockup.
The female inmates, ranging in age from 22 to 45, were tested Sept. 29, said Shelby County sheriff’s Maj. Ken Burchfield. “We have had a previous problem of things being smuggled in to the jail. It’s a battle every day,’' he said. “We decided to drug test all of our inmates.”
All of the nine women charged tested positive for methamphetamine, and were charged this week. That’s not necessarily crystal meth, but could encompass a variety of substances containing amphetamines. Promoting prison contraband is a misdemeanor. Bond for each of the women on that charge was set at $5,000.
