ATLANTA — An inmate was shot in the hand at Fulton County Jail Tuesday by another inmate, and there was no ready explanation for how the gun was obtained inside the facility.
The inmate, whose identity was not disclosed, had an injury that was not considered life-threatening, jail officials said.
The alleged shooter was identified as Kortez Hurt, who has an extensive criminal record, including an assortment of felony murder, aggravated assault, drug possession and theft charges. Hurt is in Fulton County Jail for his 14th incarceration, jail officials said.
The inmates involved in the incident had a dispute concerning the commissary, said officials who did not disclose details.
Jail spokesman Tracy Flanagan said the injured inmate was shot in the hand and a small gun “no larger than a mobile telephone” was found.
The wounded inmate was treated by jail medical personnel, and no other inmate was injured.
A deputy inside the jail earlier said there were several shots and the incident occurred on the jail’s seventh floor, which houses more dangerous inmates. Flanagan did not provide any information on the number of shots involved or where the incident occurred.
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m., and the jail was on lockdown for much of the day. The jail said an outside law enforcement agency would investigate.
