LAKE CITY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirms a gun, believed to have been used to shoot two inmates, has been recovered from the Columbia Correctional Institution.
According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office the shooting happened around 5:15 p.m. Saturday. The initial 911 call came into the county communications center as a stabbing but was later updated to a shooting. Dozens of officers with the Rapid Response Team, a group usually called to quell riots, were seen entering the facility. The prison has been on lockdown since the shooting, meaning no visitations, controlled seating is being enforced and everyone is being escorted.
For Rosetta Robinson, who lives just a few miles away from the prison, the incident has raised serious safety questions.
“You’re keeping a prison. You’re not keeping your brother and your sister, you’re keeping inmates that broke the law and they need to be more stricter inside,” said Robinson. The Department of Corrections, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office are all investigating.
“Protecting the safety of Florida’s families is the primary mission of the Florida Department of Corrections. The Department of Corrections continues to work closely with its law enforcement partners on this active, ongoing investigation,” said Jessica Cary, spokesperson for the DOC. “At this point, we cannot comment further on the details related to this incident.”
