MUSKEGON, Mich. — An Earnest C. Books Correctional Facility employee scared away a potential contraband smuggler while doing patrol around the prison.

MLive reports that the employee was inside a perimeter security vehicle when they spotted someone near the prison fence. The employee honked, startling the person and notifying a police officer outside the fence.

The suspect took off down the nearby Musketawa Trail pedestrian-bike path. Officers gave chase but were unable to apprehend the suspect.

Corrections officers checked the perimeter and both sides of the fence, but no contraband was located.

“Nobody saw anyone throw anything over the fence, and we have not found anything in the yard,” said Michigan DOC spokesman Chris Gautz.
