ALBANY, N.Y. — A New York State corrections officer foiled a plot to smuggle narcotics to a prison inmate through two cans of tomato sauce, according to a statement from the CO’s union.
On July 25, a CO was working in a package room and inspected a box heading toward the Cayuga Correctional Facility. The CO found 600 milligrams of narcotics hidden inside two eight ounce cans of tomato sauce.
The CO, whose name has not been released, discovered the unidentified contents of the cans by using the X-ray machine in the package room. The lids had a partially indented seam and glue could be seen protruding from the two cans.
The officer removed both lids and found two balloons partially submerged in the sauce in each can. Each balloon contained blue and white suboxone packets with a combined dosage of 10MG per packet. There were a total of 60 packets of suboxone in the cans.
“Correctional facilities are inherently dangerous workplaces for our officers, and becoming more dangerous every year as assaults, gang violence and contraband hit record levels. Thanks to an alert corrections officer, we were able to prevent contraband from coming into the Cayuga Facility,” said Joe Miano, NYSCOPBA Vice President of the Western Region.
