ALBUQUERQUE — The state’s Corrections Department recently ordered a statewide lockdown of all 11 prison facilities as a part of a periodic review which unveiled lots of contraband, including shanks, money, and drugs.

According to KOAT, corrections staff spent 10 days reviewing procedures and searching housing units.

“These findings underscore a simple truth about prisons, that’s the reality that our safety will never get compromised by overestimating our threats,” said Corrections Secretary Gregg Marcantel. “Because we will never catch everything coming in, having the courage to look at ourselves is our way of rejecting the idea that luck or any other chance factor will determine the safety of New Mexico’s prisons.”

There are still a few facilities on restricted movement while officers continue to investigate how certain items were smuggled into the prisons, according to the report.
