SAN ANTONIO — Officials with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice have seized more than 1,400 makeshift weapons from Texas inmates in 2014, according to a TDCJ spokesman.
Department spokesman Jason Clark said prison officials have a variety of ways to see if any of the approximately 150,000 offenders in 109 state facilities are carrying homemade weapons — or items that could be used as a weapon.
Those methods include random cell searches, canine searches and using a body orifice scanning system.
Last year, officials seized more than 1,700 weapons from Texas prisoners.
