UK prisons install nets to prevent contraband

Inmates inside the facility were receiving deliveries of drugs stuffed inside tennis balls, dead animals and Kinder Eggs

NORTHUMBERLAND, UK — Officials at HMP Northumberland confirmed that it is installing netting along its fences to prevent contraband from being thrown over.

The Mirror reports that inmates inside the facility were receiving deliveries of drugs stuffed inside tennis balls, dead animals and Kinder Eggs, a popular chocolate candy.

Friends of the inmates are reportedly using tennis ball launchers to send the items over prison fences and into rec yards.

A firm named Sodexo has run the prison since December 2013; when they took over, the firm announced that 200 jobs would be cut. The increase in contraband has been linked to staffing shortages by critics of the company.
