AUBURN — Eight Auburn prison inmates were taken to the hospital within eight days after using synthetic marijuana, an official said.

The Auburn Correctional Facility put extra security measures in place to reduce the chances of prisoners getting accesses to the substance, said spokesperson Lisa Foglia, of the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

She said some of the restrictions include the temporary ban of incoming items to inmates, such as tea and smokeless tobacco, which can be replaced with synthetic marijuana.

Since April 23, the eight Auburn inmates were part of nearly 40 inmates statewide who were treated at hospitals after using synthetic marijuana, Foglia said.
