SAN JOSE, Calif. — A Marin County jail inmate died by hanging Monday, investigators said.

Daymitreeus Sessoms, 45, of San Rafael, was found unresponsive in his cell at about noon. Deputies attempted to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead by paramedics.

Preliminary results of an autopsy performed by the Sonoma County Coroner’s Office were “consistent with hanging,” according to the Novato Police Department, which is investigating the case as part of protocol for in-custody deaths.

“There was no apparent natural disease or other trauma to attribute any other cause of death,” Novato police said in a statement Thursday.

Sessoms was arrested early Monday morning on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, hit-and-run and violating probation, police said.
