Former CO charged in shooting of fellow trainee

A former corrections officer who is accused of shooting a fellow trainee has been indicted on charges.

The Kennebec Journal reported that Matthew Benger, 24, is accused of shooting fellow corrections officer Matthew Morrison in the parking lot of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy last June.

Benger, who is free on bail, shot Morrison while they were sitting in a truck belonging to Cody Gillis, in the parking lot of the police academy complex.

Benger was holding a 9mm gun that Gillis kept in the console of his truck, when the gun discharged, striking Morrison in the leg.

The Kennebec Journal reported that Benger and Gillis were COs in Cumberland County, while Morrison was a CO in Aroostook County. Morrison has been unable to return to work since the shooting.

All three were in nearing the end of a five-week basic corrections training program.
