NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A Wilmington man in custody on drug charges was additionally charged with attempted escape and identity theft Sunday when he unsuccessfully tried to bail out using his cellmate’s identity.

Montrille Damon Dailey, 25, was arrested Oct. 30 by the Wilmington Police Department on two counts of heroin trafficking, one count of possession of heroin and one count of conspiracy to sell/deliver heroin. His bail was set at $1.5 million.

On Sunday, when Dailey’s sleeping cellmate was called to be bailed out, Dailey attempted to impersonate him, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jerry Brewer said. Jail staff discovered the fraud when Dailey went to the booking desk to outprocess, Brewer said.

Bail on the new charges was set at $35,000.
