WESTERN CAPE, South Africa — Five prison warders at the Drankenstein Correctional Centre in South Africa were stabbed and seriously injured.

The Times Live reports that the cause of the attack is unclear, but it may be linked to a gang ritual.

One of the officers was stabbed in the chest; all were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Officials believe the incident may be linked to another attack at the Brandvlei prison in Worcester on Jan. 4, which is a suspected “spilling of blood” gang ritual.

In that incident, a prisoner with a lock in a sock struck a prison warder over the head.

The warder later died in a hospital after being in a coma for 10 days.
