BERMUDA, UK — A retired correctional officer said he was overcome with emotion after an inmate thanked him in his graduation speech.
Today in Bermuda reports that four men graduated with their GEDs at the Westgate Correctional Facility. The youngest of the graduates, Sanchea Douglas, thanked his parents but also had gratitude for one of the facility’s officers, Winslow Cameron.
“Thank you, Mr. Cameron, for all that you said and did as an officer and as the father of one of my best friends,” Douglas said.
Cameron, along with Douglas’ parents, cried.
“It was very emotional,” Cameron said. “I was very overcome with emotion to see this young gentleman graduate with his GED, to learn what he and many others went through to get it.”
He described Douglas as a ‘hard nut to crack,’ but said that he made sure to take Douglas under his wing and treat him the same as the others.
“I was given a task to help change people’s lives,” he said when asked why he showed such compassion to inmates. “I thought by encouraging them and giving them encouraging words and helping them in any way I can, that would be a good thing to boost them in whatever they done.”
