BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, UK — A judge awarded a former prison officer nearly £500,000 for a work-related injury that forced him to retire and ultimately changed his life.

Simon Butler fractured his right ankle when he slipped on ice during a K-9 patrol, causing him to medically retire from the profession, according to BBC.

Butler and his wife, upon whom he now fully relies, informed Judge Roaslind Coe that he suffers from constant pain and has a 25 percent chance of needing an amputation.

Coe commended the Butlers for being “entirely honest and straightforward witnesses” who “sought to minimize the toll of the accident on them.”

Butler was also granted the right to return to court for further compensation if his condition deteriorates.

Coe awarded him £496,717, equivalent to $760,945.61.
