Md. cuts corrections worker jobs to save $3 million

Positions being cut create a duplication of services

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A plan to save $3 million means the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services will lose dozens of jobs.

WBAL TV reports that the DPSCS is in the middle of overhauling its HR department at the behest of Governor Larry Hogan, who instructed his cabinet to cut agency costs by 2 percent.

The positions being cut, according to the Board of Public Works, create a duplication of services, overlap and communication problems. The plan is to consolidate the work into five hubs around the state.

The 63 people informed that they will lose their jobs in 60 days are upset.

“I have a mortgage, I have a car payment, I have car insurance, gas and electric, I have my telephone bill, I have a pet,” Emily Eubanks, a DPSCS human resource specialist, said. “It was like a slap in my face. You know, they keep explaining why it is being done, but it’s not explained to me why you pick a whole unit.”
