Mich. nears goal of hiring 1,000 correctional officers

The success is attributed to advertising via billboards and radio ads

DETROIT — The Michigan Department of Corrections reports that it is on target to meet its goal of recruiting 700 to 1,000 correctional officers this year.

Detroit News reports that 686 officers have passed the department’s 16-week training academy. Another class of 300 is set to graduate on Nov. 6, bringing the total to 986 for the year.

The success is attributed to advertising via billboards and radio ads; this is the first time the department has used such means to recruit officers.

Michigan has about 6,800 officers employed now. Those interested in applying should go online to the corrections department’s website.
